From white supremacist to right-wing politicians, we have watched an impressive number of vehemently and vocally anti-gay folks get caught up in gay sexscapades. Homophobia is in itself insanity. But being homophobic and gay, and building your career around that homophobia, well that seems like a bit more than just your run-of-the-mill self-hatred.
This is a Cuban tree frog on a tree in my backyard in southern Florida. How and why he ate this light is a mystery. It should be noted that at the time I was taking this photo, I thought this frog was dead, having cooked himself from the inside. I’m happy to say I was wrong. After a few shots he adjusted his position. So after I was finished shooting him, I pulled the light out of his mouth and he was fine. Actually, I might be crazy but I don’t think he was very happy when I took his light away.
Today in History: On May 15, 1988, the Soviet Union begins its withdrawal of 150,000 troops from Afghanistan. It would take 9 months for all troops to leave. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 27, 1979. The Soviet Union went in to help the Afghani government fight against the mujahideen. The United States supplied arms to the mujahideen jihad rebels, hoping to weaken the socialist government in Afghanistan. Most notable of these Islamic rebels was Osama bin Laden. The Soviet Union eventually took a smaller role in the conflict as the fighting continued and the Soviet Union grew weaker. By 1989, they had left the country torn and shattered. The political and economic instability in the region led to fighting between various warlords, and the eventual seize of power by the Taliban in 1996.
Your: possessive form, something that belongs to oneself
You’re: contraction of “you are”, second person form of the verb “to be”
Mix these up and you are a fool. Tattoo them wrongly upon somebody’s skin and you should be criminally prosecuted. Pay for that and I do not have foul enough words to describe your stupidity adequately.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali enters an apartment in New York followed by a bodyguard. The 40-year-old, who for the last six years has been unable to turn up at a venue without it being checked by security, is a writer, polemicist and critic of Islam. She is also a Somali immigrant, an ex-Muslim, a survivor of child genital mutilation, an exile many times over, a former Dutch MP, a black woman whose language would not, in places, look amiss in a BNP pamphlet, a remarked-upon beauty and a lady-in-peril, identities that lend her as a figurehead to disparate causes and bring on confusion in the people she meets…
“I’m not being rightwing,” she says. “The people who believe themselves to be on the left, and who defend the agents of Islam in the name of tolerance and culture, are being rightwing. Not just rightwing. Extreme rightwing. I don’t understand how you can be so upset about the Christian right and just ignore the Islamic right. I’m talking about equality.”
For an album about love, you would think more of these people would be looking at each other. Just that girl with the flower that looks like a doll arm. Her young suitor there doesn’t look too interested, though.
Comedy should provoke! It should blast through prejudices, challenge preconceptions! Comedy should always leave you different than when it found you. Sure, humor can hurt, even alienate, but the risk is better than the alternative: a steady diet of innocuous, child-proof, flavorless mush! DEMAND to be challenged, to be offended, to be treated like thinking, reasoning adults! And raise your children to be the same. Don’t let a comedian, a network, a Congressional committee, or an evil genius take away your freedom to laugh at whatever you want.
